Phenology Friday

Noticings for the week of May 18-24, 2024 in Fairbanks, Alaska

Mid- to late May is one of my favorite times in Fairbanks. Life is bursting forth after a long winter of dormancy. There are so many things to notice that it can be kind of overwhelming at times, exacerbated by the knowledge that our summer is so fleeting, and if you do not take it in you will not see it for another year.

This week I had an inkling that the calypso orchids might be starting to bloom on the trails. I was right! They were just beginning to come on, and I was so delighted to see their gorgeous little faces. Daisy was delighted to lick them.

No orchids were harmed in this photo

On our walk and at the Farmstead, we also noticed the wild roses leafing out, alders leafing out with their sawtooth edges, horsetails emerging, and buffaloberry flowering. The trees are almost fully leafed out and it is definitely summer! Happy noticings!
